Call for Papers

The International Group for Lean Construction (IGLC) is an international network of researchers from practice and academia in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) who feel that the practice, education, and research of the AEC industry have to be radically renewed to respond to the global challenges ahead. Researchers from Industry and Academia in the AEC industry and related fields are invited to submit papers on Lean Construction research and applications for presentation at the IGLC35 in Munich under the following dates:

*To accommodate the extended processing times of up to 60 working days required by the Foreign Office, submissions from individuals originating from visa-required countries will be reviewed through an expedited evaluation process. The final acceptance decision for these submissions will be communicated by the committee no later than March 31.

Research Tracks

1 - People, Culture, and Change

Research and practice focused on the human and organizational dimensions of Lean, including leadership, culture, governance, collaboration, communication, workforce development, and organizational transformation. This track welcomes work examining how individuals, teams, and organizations adopt, sustain, and evolve Lean ways of working.

2 - Digitalization

Research exploring how digital technologies enable, enhance, or transform Lean construction principles and practices. This track welcomes work examining BIM, artificial intelligence, digital twins, data analytics, automation, robotics, visualization, digital decision support, Construction 4.0/5.0, and other technologies that improve information flow, collaboration, production, and value delivery.

3- Production Planning and Commercial Management

Research on planning, coordinating, and controlling project delivery and productivity, and on the commercial strategies that shape it. This track welcomes work on the Last Planner System, Takt, location-based methods, and workflow, alongside contracts, cost management, procurement, supply chain management, and collaborative delivery approaches that improve predictability, coordination, and production performance.

4- Sustainable and Resilient Built Environments

Research on how Lean principles and practices contribute to sustainable, resilient, safe, healthy, and high-quality built environments across their life cycles. This track welcomes work on Lean and Green, carbon and waste reduction, circularity, health and well-being, occupational safety, human factors, quality and resilience engineering, commissioning, operations and maintenance, renovation and retrofit, and adaptation to changing environmental, social, and operational conditions.

5 - Design, Value, and Decision-Making

Research on defining, creating, and delivering value through design, product development, and collaborative decision-making. Topics include Lean Design, Target Value Delivery, customer and stakeholder value, Choosing by Advantages, set-based design, design management and coordination, requirements management, and methods for improving decisions across project definition, design, and development.

6 - Industrialized Construction

Research exploring Lean approaches to production system design — including construction sequencing, method selection, and operating system design — industrialized and off-site construction, and supply networks. Topics highlighted in this track include prefabrication, modularization, Modern Methods of Construction, logistics, supplier capability and collaboration, manufacturing-construction integration, and approaches for creating reliable flow across project and production networks.

7 - Lean Theory, Methods, and Education

Research advancing the theoretical, methodological, and educational foundations of Lean Construction, including the development, testing, adaptation, and application of Lean theory, research methods, and conceptual frameworks. This track also welcomes research on building Lean knowledge and capabilities through curricula, simulations, games, training, knowledge transfer, and other educational approaches.

Whether someone needs a visa for Germany mainly depends on their nationality and the intended length of stay. Germany generally distinguishes between the following categories:

Visa-free entry: Citizens of EU member states, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, do not require a visa to enter Germany.
